Poniard

A poniard is a form of dagger with a slim square or triangular blade. It was primarily used for stabbing in close quarters or in conjunction with a rapier. The poniard is almost identical to the dirk. Shorter than a short sword and longer than a dagger, this blade is used more as a decorative weapon than for practical use.

Neon Museum at the Fremont Street Experience

Neon Museum at the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, features signs from old casinos and other businesses displayed outdoors.

For many years, the Young Electric Sign Company stored many of these old signs in their “boneyard.” The signs were slowly being destroyed by exposure to the elements. The museum is slowly restoring the signs and placing them around the Fremont Street Experience.

History

November, 1996: The Neon Museum at the Fremont Street Experience opens with the Hacienda Horse & Rider sign being lit at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street.

On January 24, 2006, the original 80 foot tall Sahara sign was donated to the museum.

Boneyard

This is the site where old signs owned by the Museum are stored. For the safety of the collection, the location of the Boneyard is not disclosed unless someone books an appointment to stop by. Tours of the Boneyard can be booked directly through the Museum’s website (link below).

Neutron-induced swelling

Neutron-induced swelling is the increase of volume and decrease of density of materials subjected to intense neutron radiation. Neutrons impacting the material’s lattice rearrange its atoms, causing buildup of dislocations, voids, and Wigner energy. Together with the resulting strength reduction and embrittlement, it is a major concern for materials for nuclear reactors.

Materials show significant differences in their swelling resistance.

Khmu people

The Khmu or Khammu is one of the largest ethnic groups based in northern Laos. They can also be found in Myanmar, southwest China (especially around the province of Guizhou), Thailand, and Vietnam, where they are an officially recognized ethnic group. In the People’s Republic of China, however, they are not given official recognition as a separate ethnic group, and are instead placed under the broad category undistinguished nationalities.

Their language, in the Mon-Khmer family, is also called Khmu.

Most villages are isolated, and only slowly receiving electricity.

In many areas the Khmu live alongside the Hmong and other ethnic groups.

Most of the agricultural work in Khmu villages is done communally, so as to combine the strength and finish the work quickly.

A large number of Khmu live in Richmond, California, having come as refugees from the Vietnam War.

Cuisine

Most Khmu eat thum-som.

Notable Khmu

  • Pheng Normpraseuth (American rapper), first official signee of scro records founded by his cousin Jimmy Jones.

Lady crab

The lady crab, Ovalipes ocellatus, is a crab that is usually found on sandy shallow water. Normally, a very difficult habitat to live in because of wave action and shifting sands. This animal escapes these dangers by burrowing just beneath the sand surface. As waves toss the sand around, it quickly shifts position and digs back underground. The lady crab looks different from other crabs. The claws are not large but sharp. Its legs are flat and paddle shaped. The crab grows 4 in (10 cm) wide. The lady crab is found from Cape Cod to Texas.

The lady crab has teeth known as frontal teeth on its shell found between the eyes. The teeth behind the eyes are called marginal teeth. The lady crab has three frontal teeth and five marginal teeth. (Each side; thus the lady crab has ten total teeth)

The lady crab will eat on live or decaying organisms such as fish, crabs, or clams which makes it a carnivore and scavenger. When fish or worms pass it, it comes out of the sand, and grabs the animal with its claw.

Like other swimming crabs, the lady crab has less protection than other crabs that have hard shells. The lady crab has an exoskeleton. For the lack of protection, it makes up for this by its speed and camouflage.

The lady crab has compound eyes set at the tips of the pair of stalks. Being that the eyes are at the tip of the stalks, it allows it to see more clearly. The eyes are stalked which allows them to be aware of predators.

Males and females are told apart by looking at the abdominal flap beneath their bodies. The female has a wide body to carry the eggs while the males have a thin flap. Once the eggs hatch, they’re planktonic. When they are born, they do not resemble their parents until they have molted several times over the next few weeks. As they grow, they pass through two main stages called zoea and megalopa before being an adult.

The lady crab molts, like most animals with an exoskeleton, as it grows. They appear to stop molting when they reach 4 in wide. Adults that stop molting are often covered in barnacles or seaweed.

Strip map and sample

Strip map and sample is a method of archaeological excavation applied in the United Kingdom to preserve archaeological remains by record in the face of development threat. It involves machine stripping of an area, plotting observed features onto a site plan and then partially excavating those features (sampling).

Strip map and sample is undertaken when a site is to be destroyed by development and no satisfactory method of preserving archaeological remains in situ can be devised or adequate funding and time has not be factored into development project planning to allow for a full archaeological investigation.
